Ionbond™ CVD 29 Ultra: Enhanced performance in continuous and interrupted cutting
Ionbond is pleased to announce our latest addition to our chemical vapor deposition (CVD) coating portfolio: Ionbond™ CVD 29 Ultra. This coating provides an impressive performance boost in demanding applications, such as high-performance continuous and interrupted machining. The coating will be available from Ionbond plants in Olten (Switzerland) and Cleveland (USA).
The coating of choice for many demanding applications
Kalpak Shaha, Global Segment Manager Cutting Tools, explains the important structural quality of the coating: “The enhanced toughness and exceptional hardness of Ionbond™ CVD 29 Ultra is a result of its specific Al2O3 crystallographic orientation. It gives the coating a larger capacity to deform before chipping and cracking. This allows the coating to maintain its integrity and to deliver outstanding wear resistance, reducing both crater and flank wear.”
Ionbond™ CVD 29 Ultra also has high hot hardness and excellent thermal stability, which means it is a good coating for fast, high-productivity machining. It can also handle machining of sticky materials well, thanks to a high chemical inertness. “For demanding applications such as turning, milling, peeling and scarfing, this coating is the smart choice to help you maximize productivity,” summarizes Kalpak.
Available in two colors, applicable in many sectors
Ionbond™ CVD 29 Ultra comes in two colors: gold and black. Gold is the standard color for inserts, because it provides good wear indication. However, other cutting tool customers may prefer black rather than gold.
Black is also interesting for forming and molding tools and industrial component applications, such as aerospace, automotive, defense and oil and gas. In those sectors, the coating’s chemical inertness is often the most valuable aspect, and the black coating looks better in context. Development projects are ongoing to qualify the coating in these sectors.
Ionbond plants serving the USA and Europe
Robert Jäggi, Country Manager Switzerland, says: “We’ve already implemented Ionbond™ CVD 29 Ultra in our Olten plant and have tested it with key customers. They have been very satisfied with it so far, naming up to a 50% increase in performance compared to their previous standard CVD coating.” The plant in Olten is ready for an expected increase in requests, with a new, more streamlined plant and a lineup of multiple state-of-the-art CVD coating machines.
In the Cleveland plant, we are also extending production capacity to add Ionbond™ CVD 29 Ultra to the portfolio. “We’re doing the full rollout,” says Mike Greenwell, Plant Manager Cleveland. “New machine, new coating, expected to be ready this year. We’re seeing more requests for milling and turning tools recently, and we are looking forward to filling these requests and more.”
