Ionbond joins the AMMMT: serving the Mexican manufacturing industry with high-quality coatings

As part of our expansion and investments in Mexico, Ionbond recently joined the Asociacion Mexicana de Manufactura de Moldes y Troqueles (AMMMT), the national organization promoting high-quality manufacturing in the forming, molding and tooling industry. This goal matches Ionbond’s own, since we focus on improving the performance, quality and lifetime of a wide range of objects with our portfolio of high-quality coatings. To complete the joining process, Ionbond held an initial webinar on 30 March 2022 about our state-of-the-art coating services in our Monterrey and Silao plants.

Coating capacity for even the largest molds and dies
The forming and molding industry in Mexico is large, with many automotive and aerospace manufacturers. John Dick, Country Manager Mexico, sees many opportunities for Ionbond and Mexican manufacturing companies to work together. “Ionbond’s process engineers specialize in providing solutions for difficult molding applications. Our coatings, developed in our Competence Center in Madison Heights, MI, USA, increase tool life, reduce downtime and generally improve productivity.”
In Mexico, Ionbond provides services for the forming and molding tool sector out of our Monterrey and Silao plants, with state-of-the-art equipment and expert teams of process engineers. John: “In Monterrey, we recently installed three Hauzer Flexicoat® 1500 physical vapor deposition (PVD) machines, giving us new capacity and capabilities. We can now offer diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings and coat much larger molds and dies than our competitors can. Our engineering teams are always happy to work with you to determine the right coating properties for your application and to provide sampling.”

Five-day turnaround time with our own transport service
What differentiates Ionbond from our competitors is our overall service. Because we understand the importance of day-to-day productivity, our coating services are designed to fit inside our customers’ workflows as much as possible. John: “For our full-service refurbishment, we offer daily pick-up and delivery of tools to be refurbished, free of charge – with experienced drivers who know how to carefully handle forming and molding tools. At our facility, we look at the condition of your tools to determine the best course of action, and then notify you of the required steps. On top of that, we offer a five-day turnaround time.”

Decades of experience and knowledge of the full manufacturing chain
With over 50 years of experience, Ionbond is well-versed in the complexity of the forming and molding industry. Tobias Brögelmann, Global Segment Manager Forming and Molding Tools, says: “We offer standard coatings from our portfolio but also develop tailormade coating solutions for specific applications – whether you are working for a large OEM or a small or mid-size company.”
John: “Joining the AMMMT and organizing our first webinar on the forming and molding industry is a great chance to raise our profile in Mexico and show manufacturing companies what we can offer them. If you only need a PVD coating, we are happy to work with you. And if you have a more complex application in mind, which requires stripping, pre-coat polishing, plasma nitriding, post-coat polishing and other steps, we have the experience to provide you with that as well.”

Contact us for all applications, from common to highly challenging
Ionbond’s coating portfolio is highly diverse, allowing for the perfect combination of the base material and surface properties. This results in longer tool life, improved product quality, reduced lubricant usage, reduced production downtime and machine maintenance, and elimination of secondary operations. This all leads to substantial cost savings.
Hugo Romero, Production Manager at the Monterrey facility, says: “Our multipurpose coatings are excellent for common forming and molding applications, while our premium coatings can provide the best performance for the most severe applications. For instance, in cold forming metal sheets of high thickness or non-ferrous metals, hot forging, high-pressure aluminum die casting and plastic molding, with their more challenging manufacturing circumstances. And because we are first and foremost a service organization, we are always happy to discuss your specific application and requirements with you.”
