Ionbond™ 357: Advanced duplex coating for extreme forging conditions

Are you looking for a solution to crack formation, heat checking and die fatigue in hot forging applications? Ionbond has developed a new duplex coating that provides 300-500% more productivity. Read on to learn more!

Improve productivity and product quality while hot forging steel

Warm or hot forging steel is very hard on dies, due to the extremely high temperatures and impact stresses they are exposed to. That is why the surface engineers at IHI Ionbond decided to meet this challenge and take the next evolutionary step in coating solution, creating Ionbond™ 357.

Superior characteristics based on proven technology

Ionbond™ 357 is based on our well-established Ionbond™ 35 coating, with a proven track record in high-temperature forming applications such as aluminum high-pressure die casting. The new coating has a multi-layered PVD structure for excellent mechanical and thermal fatigue resistance. Since it is a duplex coating, where the PVD layer rests on a nitriding layer, the coating:

Reduces heat checking and crack formation

Offers low coefficient of friction against steel and aluminum at high temperatures

Improves productivity, machine availability and product quality

Minimizes scrap rate in warm and hot forging applications

Duplex Ionbond 357 Hot forging field performance

Clear results when tested in the field

Our customer in the USA loves how duplex Ionbond™ 357 takes their productivity to new and unpredecented heights. The superior results speak for themselves: in a hot-forging application with a progressive die setup, using Ionbond™ 357 in stage 1 increased the productivity by 235% compared to a nitrided steel die. In the more technically challenging  stage 2, the increase was a striking 500%. The coating minimized abrasive wear in both stages, while the nitride layer significantly delays heat checking.
