Coating Stainless Steel: Overcoming Challenges for Lasting Results

Stainless steel is a highly durable and functional material, with a smooth surface and  good corrosion resistance. However, it takes special preparation to coat, paint or color it. Successful painting, in particular, requires extra care and the use of specific techniques and products to ensure long-lasting adhesion. For physical vapor deposition coating, however, stainless steel is the perfect material.

Ionbond offers decorative Decobond™ PVD coatings for stainless steel applications

Decobond™ is widely used to enhance the surface properties of stainless steel, because of its ability to improve both the appearance and performance of the base material. The PVD coating process involves depositing thin, durable ceramic coatings onto metal surfaces through the vaporization of a solid material in a vacuum environment.

How Decobond™ works

To deposit a Decobond™ PVD coating, the metal or ceramic material (such as titanium, zirconium or chromium) is vaporized and ionized to a plasma in a vacuum chamber. This plasma can then be directed onto the stainless steel surface, forming a thin, hard, strong and wear-resistant layer. The process occurs at a low temperature, which secures the corrosion-resistant properties of stainless steel. The Decobond™ PVD coating is so thin that you can still see the surface texture of the base material, which means that after Decobond™ coating:

High gloss objects maintain their high gloss

Matte parts stay matte

Parts with a brushed texture retain their accent texture

Advantages of Decobond™ PVD coating on stainless steel

1. Enhanced durability

Decobond™ coatings are 2 to 4x harder than stainless steel. This exceptional hardness gives components more scratch and wear resistance. As a result, the coating makes the parts more durable, especially in demanding applications such as medical devices, automotive components and kitchenware.

2. Improved aesthetics

Decobond™ PVD allows for a wide range of metal finishes while retaining the base texture of the material (shiny, matte or brushed). Stainless steel can be given a lustrous appearance or even a gold, black, or bronze finish, enhancing its visual appeal without compromising its strength.

3. Environmental benefits

Decobond™ PVD is a dry process that does not require harmful chemicals or produce hazardous waste. This makes it a more environmentally friendly alternative to other coating methods like electroplating.

Ready for your applications

Decobond™ PVD-coated stainless steel is used in a wide variety of industries, including architecture, automotive, nautical, aerospace, sport, luxury and consumer goods. Its combination of enhanced strength, aesthetic appeal, and corrosion resistance makes it a preferred choice for high-end finishes on both functional and decorative components.
