Off-road and racing

In the automotive industry, the efficient coating solutions developed by IHI Ionbond engineers are widely used for applications in internal combustion engines. This success has carried over to off-road applications, using the same general concepts to reduce wear and friction in moving contacts. Despite the difference in parts size and requirements, Tribobond coatings offer remarkable solutions for components of ship, locomotive and power generation diesel engines and racing powertrains.

Application areas for off-road and racing

Off-road Vehicles

Diesel engines

Modern diesel engines remain some of the most efficient means of generating power from fossil fuels. For this reason, such engines are widely used for various heavy-duty off-road applications - powering ships, locomotives, power generators and earth-moving and agricultural equipment. For these applications, as for automotive engines, Tribobond coatings provide efficient protection against wear, while reducing friction in contacts with limited lubrication.

Application examples include:

  • Anti-seizing Tribobond films for elimination of bronze bushes in steel/cast iron pistons
  • Wear- and friction-reducing coatings in large-unit plungers and fuel injectors
  • Specialty Tribobond coatings for heavy-duty gears
  • Wear and scuffing protection in hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders

Turbochargers

Tribobond coatings are widely used for wear protection of components of large turbochargers, such as thrust bearings and seal rings. IonbondCVD coatings offer solutions for anti-fouling in the turbine section of turbochargers.

Earth-moving and agricultural equipment

Certain coatings from the Tribobond portfolio offer effective protection against abrasion, a common issue for machinery dealing with earth and sand. Application examples include protection against abrasive wear on track pins and wear components of cultivators.

Racing

Whether in F1, Nascar, MotoGP, WRC, DTM, or OSS racing, reliable and efficient performance of racing powertrains is critical to racing success. Such powertrains are designed to extract maximum energy from every ounce of fuel, which requires pushing the materials to the limits. This is where  Tribobond coatings shine, helping to combat wear, decrease friction losses, enable use of lightweight materials and ensure reliable performance.

Valve train components coatings

Valve train components

The Tribobond family of coating offers solutions for many critical components of the valve train. Low-friction diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings (Tribobond™ 40/41/42/43) provide excellent performance in heavily loaded contacts of finger followers, backet tappets and camshafts.  A different class of ceramic coatings for high-temperature applications helps protect valve stems and the sealing surfaces of engine valves.

Crank train components

Whenever possible, modern racing engines use lightweight materials to reach optimal engine dynamics and reduce overall weight. Most of these materials (e.g. titanium and aluminum) are relatively soft and cannot provide the level of wear resistance required for stable performance. This is especially true for some components of the crank train, such as connecting rods, pistons and piston pins. Tribobond coatings on such components provide a remarkable improvement in surface hardness and wear resistance, with the added benefit of decreasing friction. In extreme cases, the coatings can also be applied to crankshafts for enhancement of their tribological properties and performace boost.

Chassis and suspension

There are many components on the chassis and suspension that benefit greatly from the use of low-friction, wear-reducing coatings to increase their safe functioning. The Tribobond line of component coatings offers a wide range of options for individual situations.

Typical parts include:

  • Wheel hubs
  • Shock absorber tubes (motorbikes)
  • Bearings
  • Fasteners
