Food and pharmaceutical industries
Considering that there are strict and regulated requirements to materials that are in contact with substances for human consumption, selection of suitable materials can pose substantial challenges. Use of steels is typically restricted to stainless steels, which have only limited ability to resist wear. To prevent food contamination, lubrication is often impossible, which creates additional problems for tribological contacts in food and pharmaceutical machinery.

Processing Abrasive Food Substances
Many powdery food substances, such as sugar, grains or cereals can cause abrasive wear, which is accentuated by relatively soft steels used in machinery for their processing. Coating components exposed to such conditions with hard Tribobond™ coatings can substantially reduce wear and also avoid contamination of food products with by-products of steel wear. Reduced wear can in turn increase reliability of operation and reduce planned and emergency downtimes.
Anti-fouling and Reduction of Sticking
Sticking and related build-up formation may present a serious issue during processing of certain foods, which in extreme cases would lead to the disruption of production. Equally serious could be problems related to fouling phenomena, which occur in transportation of liquid food materials (e.g. milk). Tribobond™ coatings can substantially reduce the negative impacts of fouling and prevent sticking, which would ease the flow of the media and reduce cleaning efforts.
Stainless Steel Material
Stainless steel is notorious for its tendency to galling and cold welding. Considering that this is one of the few metallic materials accepted in food industry, prevention of galling is very important. Tribobond™ coatings applied on stainless steel components, will virtually eliminate risk of galling of cold welding when stainless steels have to be used without lubrication.
