Orthopedic Implants

Orthopedic implant applications include components for hips, knees, shoulders, ankles and trauma products made of Ti or CoCr based alloys. Ti and its alloys are used for their biocompatibility. However, they have a low wear resistance and tend to fret. CoCrMo is used primarily for its higher wear resistance, but ion release is one of its undesired properties.

For both materials, Medthin™ PVD and PACVD coatings provide exceptional advantages on joints of coating against UHMWPE due to the fact that it reduces the wear of the UHMWPE counterpart. The ion release of CoCrMo is reduced by 90% when using MedthinTM coatings. Medthin™ coatings have been applied onto orthopedic implants for over twenty years and they have demonstrated their durability and added value.

Experience with Medthin™ 01 TiN, 30 CrN and 60 ZrN coated CoCrMo implants against UHMWPE have shown a wear reduction of 60% compared with uncoated components. The reduction of UHMWPE wear debris helps reducing inflammation which can require implant revision.

These coatings are also suitable for coating on coating (CoC) designs.
