The Surface Engineers

Surgical and dental instruments and tools

Commonly used materials for handheld instruments include the 300 and 400 series and precipitation hardened stainless steels due to their resistance to corrosion. However, they lack of hardness, have a tendency to galling when sliding against each other and show limitations in maintaining cutting edges.

Medthin™ PVD and PACVD coatings add the required hardness to the surface, preserving pointy tips and sharp edges for cleaner cuts, which reduces the tendency of cell necrosis. The life time of instruments and tools are extended significantly.

All Medthin™ coatings have their particular color and are ideal for color coding.

Medthin™ 20 AlTiN provides additional corrosion protection and reduces the light reflection of instruments by 70%, helping to reduce the eye fatigue of the operating personnel.

Minimally invasive surgical procedures require instruments that are longer, lighter and feature increased mechanical performance but allow only limited or no lubrication of the moving parts. Medthin™ 33 CrCN can significantly reduce or eliminate galling and reduces the friction between metal on metal surfaces, which makes lubrication unnecessary.

  • Cutting edge retention
  • Functionally decorative colors
  • Reduced light reflection of 70%
  • Low friction, anti galling
