Hot stamping of high strength materials

Hot stamping and forming of high strength steel alloys is one of the fastest growing trends in metal forming. The tools used in these applications are subject to abrasive and adhesive wear, along with demanding thermal conditions. Ionbond™ PVD coatings exhibit the toughness, wear resistance and galling resistance necessary in order to significantly enhance tool productivity.

Ionbond™ 35, Ionbond™ 22, and Ionbond™ 30, in combination with nitriding, are coatings for hot stamping applications.

Die casting, metal injection molding

Die cavities, cores, and inserts used in die casting and metal injection molding are subject to severe thermal, corrosive, and abrasive conditions. Ionbond™ PVD and Bernex™ CVD coatings possess the toughness, thermal stability, abrasion resistance and resistance to corrosive attack necessary to improve the productivity of the tools and the quality of the parts.

Ionbond™ 35, Ionbond™ 30, or Ionbond™ 22, with optional nitriding, are suited for close dimensional tolerance tools, while Bernex™ 29 can be considered for open tolerance tools.

Hot extrusion

The tools used in hot extrusion of both ferrous and non-ferrous alloys are subject to high forming pressures, severe abrasive wear, adhesive wear driven by corrosion and very high temperatures. Ionbond™ PVD and Bernex™ CVD coatings exhibit the toughness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and thermal stability necessary in order to significantly enhance tool productivity. Bernex™ CVD coatings are often the best option for complex geometry and large aspect ratio tools.

Bernex™ 08, Bernex™ 10, or Bernex™ 29 are suitable for open tolerance tooling, while Ionbond™ 35, Ionbond™ 22, or Ionbond™ 30, all coupled with nitriding, are coatings suited for hot extrusion tools with close dimensional tolerances.

Hot forging

Tools used in hot forging applications are subject to high forming pressures, severe abrasive and adhesive wear conditions, along with demanding thermal conditions. In addition, they are subject to high levels of impact which make it more challenging to maximize tool performance. Ionbond™ PVD coatings exhibit the toughness, wear resistance, thermal stability and galling resistance necessary in order to enhance the tool productivity and the quality of both ferrous and non-ferrous alloy parts.

Ionbond™ 22, Ionbond™ 25 and Ionbond™ 30, in combination with nitriding, are coatings suited for hot forging tools.
