Orthopedic implant applications include components for hips, knees, shoulders, ankles and trauma products made of Ti or CoCr based alloys. Ti and its alloys are used for their biocompatibility. However, they have a low wear resistance and tend to fret. CoCrMo is used primarily for its higher wear resistance, but ion release is one of its undesired properties.
For both materials, Medthin™ PVD and PACVD coatings provide exceptional advantages on joints of coating against UHMWPE due to the fact that it reduces the wear of the UHMWPE counterpart. The ion release of CoCrMo is reduced by 90% when using MedthinTM coatings.
These coatings are also suitable for coating on coating (CoC) designs.
